boom town
5 June - 27 July 2015
Opening Reception: June 5th | 6-9pm
About the exhibition:
“I believe that all art is autobiographical to one degree or another; most of my work is certainly that. Growing up in what was once considered a “wild west” boom town has had a lasting influence on what and how I choose to paint.
It’s a stew of Bible-thumping, honky-tonk blaring, shoot’em up, car racin’, self-congratulatory bravado; where extreme wealth lives across the river from crushing poverty; crass commercialism co-exists with the high ideals of a thriving arts community.
Add to this list of influences my family: ethnically they are a blend of German, English and several tribes of Native Americans. Professionally they were circus performers, firefighters, shopkeepers and even one Depression-era “revenuer” who was a “still busting” agent for the US Treasury Department. Not an artist among them; but the area did produce its share of artists who served as influences and mentors, and to them I am most grateful. “ - Steve Carver
