ESTER CURINI
Italian, b. 1964
“Each of Esther Curini’s subjects is an animal isolated on a white background. This is because they are in the main role rather than in a supporting one…”
A fierce advocate for the rights of animals and nature, Curini paints to give voice to our animal brothers and sisters in a time where the eradication of wildlife and the mistreatment of both domesticated and livestock animals contributes greatly to the emergency state of the planet. She argues that the only way for both humans and animals to thrive is for us all to find a compassionate form of coexistence.
Born in the town of Casale Monferrato in the province of Alessandria, Italy, Curini now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Impressively, she is a self-taught study. Her animal subjects, whether they be In the Wilderness, On the Farm, or At Home, all confront the viewer with a rather pointed gaze and a serious countenance. Through careful rendering of their expressions and postures in such a singular fashion, Curini elegantly confronts the viewer with the beauty, ferocity, and fragility of our animal counterparts. Her large scale works are particularly humbling.
