Gordon Lee | In Memoriam
5 April 2019 - 31 May 2019
About the exhibition:
This spring we celebrate the life and work of artist Gordon Lee with our latest exhibition, Gordon Lee: In Memoriam. Lee was born in 1954 in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He came to teach at the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in Columbus, OH in 1987, one year after gallery owner Anthony Brunelli attended. Gordon's work was brought to our attention by CCAD professor and ABFA artist, Ernest Viveiros, who taught Brunelli oil painting during his first year at college. In April 2009, we mounted our first solo exhibition with Lee titled, Urban Legends: Face to Face. His large scale, realist paintings referencing abstract composition found in urban environments were widely celebrated by our collectors and visitors prompting the beginning of a successful decade-long relationship with the artist. In April 2012, Lee mounted his second solo show with us titled, New Icons. In the coming years, his work was part of numerous group shows at our gallery and art fairs we attended such as Art Greenwich, Art Hamptons, Art Palm Beach and SCOPE Miami. In 2014, his work was included in the Dublin Biennial. Lee's work was also part museum exhibitions at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, and the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, NY. Gordon will always be remembered for his kind and gentle temperament, his prolific and dedicated career in painting and teaching, and for the innovations and humor he brought to painting. He was a treasure, and we are honored to call him our friend and one of our greats.
