Meditation Series

2 November - 29 December 2012

Artist's Opening Reception: Friday, November 2nd | 6-9 PM

About the exhibition:

We look forward to growing our presence even more in 2013 by giving our artists maximum exposure at top international art fairs and through collaborative efforts with museums, project spaces and exhibition venues around the country.  Our first collaboration is one we will be hosting in our 2nd floor gallery this November, courtesy of Waterfall Gallery in New York City.

Artist Statement

"With charcoal I begin drawing random lines and sometimes writing my desires in Korean or Chinese characters.  Other materials I use are black gesso, acrylic paint, mechanical pencils, and metallic powders.  Although I enjoy the accidents that may happen in making process, they do not determine the final outcome.

With an intuitive sense of balance and acquired compositional skill, I use rulers to scrape off the heavily layered mixed media and work towards the manifestation of a preconceived notion.  My work is a form of devotion for me, a path as legitimate as pure meditation.

Buddhist philosophy teaches me that meditation can transform and purify my mind... unburdening myself.  I therefore have sought to create a meditative state with my work that can help me subjugate my essential fears.

My work is the artistic equivalent of Zen philosophy that seeks cleansing the spirit by ridding oneself of illusory existence and fear.  The objects floating in the air are free from burden, and they have a wealth of life energy.  The complexity of each sculpture may allude to trauma, or anxiety elicited from memory, but their combined presence transforms space into one of tranquil meditation where the healing of a soul can occur." - JINWON CHANG (b. South Korea, 1967)
