Artist Statement
"The excavation of popular culture gender propaganda and its effect on the formation of identity is the foundation of my work. Appropriating existing images and text found in the toys, games, text- books and teaching materials of my own formative years of the 1960’s – 1970’s, I investigate the origins of identity formation in the context of family, school and play. By re-contextualizing these elements, I create work which challenges, provokes and amuses while shattering the conventions of visual expression. This work probes the relationship of popular culture iconography on early gay identity development and I use these source materials to articulate a world which has always existed, but was not acknowledged or represented. By using a wide spectrum of familiar materials including vinyl wallpaper, aluminum siding, floor tiles, audiovisual equipment, toys and games, this work becomes easily approachable, yet disquieting in the brutal honesty of its content. My work is infused with a sense of humor which embraces the audience and creates a non threatening, accessible environment which I hope will spark dialogue leading to an understanding and acceptance."
