The best artists take something familiar and completely transform how a viewer sees it.

Among the contemporary masters of this is Japanese artist Hisaya Taira, whose works were on display this weekend at the ArtHampton's Fine Arts Fair, through the Anthony Brunelli gallery.

Taira's best-known works are uncanny, photo-realistic paintings of New York City subway stations — scenes you'll instantly recognize, but which you won't believe were actually created with acrylic.

The Hamptons’ summer art fair season got off to a roaring start last night with the opening of ArtHamptons and Art Market Hamptons, both open through July 13. Despite the bumper-to-bumper traffic piling up en route to both events last night, the fairs had a less frenzied, more sociable vibe compared to the crazed hustle of New York City’s Frieze and Armory weeks.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The hottest new abstract artist in town has reason to celebrate.

This summer, she went from selling her work in a coffee shop to having her own gallery show.

After a local newspaper's feature on her, about 2,000 people came for opening night -- everyone from serious collectors to the artist's preschool teacher. She earned more money than she could comprehend. The gallery owner said it was his most successful show ever and scheduled a second one for October.

So celebrate, the artist did. During a recent visit, she climbed on a big bouncing ball shaped like a frog, grabbed the handles and bounced around the house with laughter pealing and pigtails flying.

The artist is Marla Olmstead. She is 4.
