It’s a long-held trope that the natural and artificial — or the organic and inorganic — are diametrically opposed. But local new media artist Joel Hobbie’s seven sculptures on view in the exhibit Interstitial can serve to remind us that the separation is a superficial one, and maybe even arbitrary. Everything, after all, from the roots and limbs of the nearest tree to the most advanced computer processor, comes from the stars.
Interstitial is an interactive exhibit. Parts of each of the seven kinetic sculptures move in reaction to the presence of the viewer. But it isn’t motion sensors that cause the reactions. It’s iris scans and facial recognition technology. In essence, these sculptures are seeing you.
In appearance, each one looks like a hybrid of the spindly branches of treelike forms, robotic elements, lenses, and other devices — as though they were the product of some mad experiment in merging organic life forms and synthetics. In a way, that’s what they are — except that the scientific mind behind these anomalies is Hobbie.

On the evening of April 26, the Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts Gallery in Downtown Binghamton opened its doors to showcase the work of seven graduating Binghamton University seniors in the BFA Exhibition “Put It on the Fridge.” The gallery opening, hosted by the Brunelli Gallery and the BU art and design department, displayed the curated work of students who are part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in the department.
While the rain poured down on State Street, the gallery’s doors were open to a warm and lively atmosphere. Guests were welcomed with snacks and refreshments. The gallery featured a wide variety of art forms from students, such as interactive computer exhibitions, traditional canvas paintings, prints and illustrations.

Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts hosts “Put It on the Fridge”, a BFA exhibition.
The exhibit constitutes the culmination of the research and production process from Binghamton University B.F.A. degree candidates: Corey Bremer (Graphic Design), Malina Gambocarto (Design/Printmaking), Taylor Hayes (Drawing), Jacqueline Kachadourian (Theater/Painting), Kelley Ma (Graphic Design), Lily Newland (Drawing), and Nate Walker (Design).

"Last Kiss" Joseph Mayernik '98
"Re/View: A CCS Alumni Exhibition" is an annual juried exhibition of work by CCS alumni from across the country. Presented by the CCS Alumni Council, the exhibition includes works in all media installed in CCS’s beautiful Valade Family Gallery, and it runs concurrently with the annual CCS Student Exhibition. The 2019 Alumni Exhibition is juried by Christine Schefman. Past jurors have included Vince Carducci, Ed Welburn, JJ Curis, Michelle Perron, Jason Mayden and George N’Namdi.
LightSpaceTime's Figurative Art Exhibition - April 2019
Wanye Claypatch’s, Out of the Pot, takes 1st place overall in LightSpaceTime’s online art competition
The gallery’s competition for March 2019 was the 9th Annual “Figurative” Online Art Competition. 2D and 3D artists (including photography & digital art) from around the world, were called upon to make online submissions for possible inclusion into the Gallery’s April 2019 online group art exhibition.
Artists were asked for their interpretation of the “Figurative” theme by submitting their best abstract or representational art for this competition. The submission process and competition for the artists began in February 2019 and concluded on March 27, 2019.
The gallery received 845 entries from 35 different countries from around the world, as well as from 33 different states.
