"The art of representation. Throughout its trajectory, which began in June 2011, the MEAM has become a reference center for contemporary figurative art, where exhibitions of nationally and internationally renowned artists are presented. Over the years, the museum has enjoyed constant evolution and overflowing activity, becoming a dynamic entity capable of generating synergies between the public and artists, thus offering a space for those who believe in a new expression of contemporary art.” - MEAM
This year, Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts is pleased to announce that two of our gallery artists: Nadine Robbins and Cesar Santander, are being featured in MEMESIS Representational Art 2023 at the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern in Barcelona, Spain.
The Color Purple is a work Nadine created in response to the movie adaptation for which it is named.
“My painting examines how the movie made me feel. The necklace is symbolic of slavery and the exceedingly low position of African-American women in American social culture in the 1930s. The naked flesh and exposed breast symbolize my visceral reaction to the scenes in the movie where Celie is assaulted. A powerful painting which embodies the current socio-political undertone of my figurative paintings of women.”
- Nadine Robbins
Nadine is an internationally renowned artist, whose work tends to focus on cultural climates and the nude form, particularly the female form. She aims to demonstrate stories of all types of people and backgrounds, with just a hint of defiance in the process. Her newer works are notably powerful and confrontational.
And from Cesar, an exhilarating homage to childhood heroes.
Superman Himself is a painting from Cesar’s recent series, Combination Paintings. This series invokes a trompe l’oeil painting technique to depict collage and childhood toys. In this featured piece, the superman toy appears to be bursting through his own comic book pages. Santander first gained notice in the 1970s and is now an internationally renowned painter whose work has been exhibited worldwide.
“I first began taking photos of nostalgic antiques and childhood objects to use as references for my paintings after being influenced by pictorial magazines and the first generation of photorealist painters. During my career, I have explored numerous series of images; each painting leads to a new idea, and some ideas are so different that they lead to a totally new series. Photos continue to be the most important element in my work, and serve as a constant source of inspiration throughout my painting process. My paintings usually take four to twelve weeks as I refine the photographic information in many ways to create a work of art that is far subtler, richer, and more personal than the photo could be. My goal is to make the most detailed and beautiful paintings of the subjects I choose.”
- Cesar Santander
The exhibition will run from 21st April - 25th June, 2023.
